Hoy, os voy a introducir un nuevo hallazgo artístico. encontré estas obras de arte por casualidad (lo tipico de escribir la URL mal y te lleva a otra pagina que no es la que querias, pero que me alegro que me pasase). Acabe fisgoneando una tienda de muebles on-line, y vi los cuadros que vendian. Fue amor a primera vista, en cuanto los vi me atrajeron por sus colores y por lo que había dibujado en ellos. Estaba tan embelesada que decidi contactar con el artista para poder exihibir sus obras en el blog. Pariseau Pierre-Paul, un señor encantador, al cual acabe liando para que me contestase algunas preguntas.

Today, I am going to introduce a new artistic discovery. I found these works of art by chance (you type the URL wrong andend up on another page that is not the one you wanted). I ended up browsing  an on-line furniture store, and saw the paintings he sold. It was love at first sight, as I saw them I was attracted by their colors and what was drawn on them. I was so amused I decided to contact the artist to be able to exihibit his works in the blog. Pierre-Paul Pariseau, a charming gentleman, whom I ended up convincing to answer some questions.

Pierre Paul es un artista autodidacto canadiense nacido en Montreal, al que siempre le ha gustado el arte pero hasta bien entrados los veinte no empezó a involucrarse. Al principio empezó dibujando unos no tan vistosos oleos, hasta que posteriormente descubriese la técnica de «photo-collage».

Pierre Paul is a self-taught artist born in Montreal, Canada, who has always loved art but he didn’t got involved until he was into his twenties. Initially he started by drawing few clumsy oil paintings, until he later discovered the technique of «photo-collage».

1) ¿Que es lo que te gusto de la técnica del «photo collage»?

Me quedé sorprendido por las imágenes surrealistas que se pueden crear a través de algunos «recortes» de fotos en las revistas, supe que había encontrado mi medio. Al principio mis collages eran muy simples. He usado un par de tijeras y  pegamento durante muchos años.

1) What was the thing about «photo-collage» that hooked you?

I was amazed by the surreal imagery that could be created using a few “cutouts” from photos in magazines; I had found my medium. At the beginning my collages were very simple. I used a pair of scissors and glue for many years.

2) ¿Pero cuando fue la primera vez que te involucraste en el mundo del arte?

Más adelante en mi carrera mis «photo collages» se hicieron más «sofisticados» y empecé a exponer en cafés, centros culturales y galerías. No mucho después de decidi construir un portfolio e ir a ver a los directores de arte de las publicaciones de la ciudad. Recibí una respuesta positiva inmediata, fue el comienzo de mi carrera como ilustrador y continúa desde entonces.

2) But when did you really get involved in the art scene?

Later on in my career my «photo collages» became more «sophisticated» and I started to exhibit in cafés, cultural centers and galleries. Not much after I decided to build a portfolio and go see art directors of publications around town. I received an immediate positive answer, it was the beginning of my career as an illustrator and it goes on since.

3) ¿Pero tu siempre te has mantenido fiel a tus comienzos? o ¿Hay cosas que han cambiado?

Mi estilo cambió, naturalmente, a medida que he ido experimentado con el medio. Mis imágenes son una mezcla de collage, pintura acrílica, acuarela, pluma y de la transformación digital en Photoshop. Al principio yo estaba haciendo fotomontajes más tradicionales de recortes con tijeras y pegamento. Luego vino el ordenador, pero con el paso del tiempo yo quería tener más posibilidades de poder cambiar los colores, modificar los recortes. Jugando con Photoshop he encontrado una manera sencilla, eficaz y estética para lograr mi objetivo. Todo ello con flexibilidad, manteniendo una lógica unificadora. Con esta nueva forma de trabajar,disfruto de mayor libertad. Al mismo tiempo, esta libertad me ayuda a servir a mis clientes de una manera más eficiente. De hecho, el proceso de experimentación no tiene principio ni fin, con una mente abierta es un flujo continuo. Toma diferentes direcciones dependiendo de sus necesidades. La gente suele asociar mi trabajo con el arte pop, surrealismo pop. Esto se debe a los colores y las composiciones que se encuentra en la mayoría de mis imágenes. Por lo menos puedo decir que nunca tuve la intención de ser pop, pero siempre (o casi) fue surrealista. Este cambio en mi estilo me permitió seguir como ilustrador, pero también había abierto las puertas de las galerías y otros lugares de exposición de mi trabajo personal. Esto es algo nuevo, porque yo había dejado de exhibir durante muchos años. Ahora estoy más involucrado en ese aspecto de mi carrera.

3) Have you always created in the same style? or have things changed along the way?

My style changed naturally, step by step as I experimented with the medium. My images are a mix of collage, acrylic paint, watercolor, pen and digital transformation in Photoshop. At the beginning I was doing more traditional photomontages from cutouts, with scissors and glue. Then came the computer, but as time went by I wanted to have more possibilities to change colors, modify the cutouts. Playing with Photoshop, ideas, forms, colors, compositions and contrasts I have found a simple, efficient and aesthetic way to reach this goal. All this with flexibility, keeping an unifying logic. With this new way of working, I enjoy the extra freedom it gives me and I believe it has an impact on my inspiration. At the same time this freedom helps me serve my clients in a more efficient way. In fact the experimentation process has no beginning and no end, with an open mind it is a continuous flow. It takes different directions depending on your needs. People usually associate my work with Pop art, Pop Surrealism. This is because of the colors and compositions you find in most of my images. At least I can say that I never intended to be Pop but always (almost) was surreal. This change in my style allowed me to last as an illustrator but also had opened the doors of galleries and other exhibition venues to my personal work. This is something new because I had stopped exhibiting for many years. I am now more involved in that aspect of my career.

4) ¿Que o quienes son tus inspiraciones?

Mi gran influencia al principio, fueron los artistas surrealistas como Dalí, Magritte, entre otros. Todo lo que era surrealista, no solo en la pintura, sino también en la literatura, la poesía y el cine. También fotomontajistas pioneros como John Heartfield, Max Ernst y Jacques Prévert. Rápidamente empeze a ver que me inspiró en un montón de cosas que vienen a mi manera, en mi entorno, llega a un punto en el que es difícil nombrar algo en particular. Siempre llevo conmigo un cuaderno en el que puedo escribir (sobre todo) y sacar ideas para las nuevas imágenes, para los títulos de trabajo, etc …

También escribio notas, no necesariamente relacionadas con mi fuente de inspiración del momento, pero la música que me gusta escuchar, exposiciones que me gustaría ver, sitios que debo visitar. Escribo partes interesantes de los libros que estoy leyendo, etc Estas notas también alimentan, de forma indirecta, a veces mi inspiración. He escrito una gran cantidad de estos cuadernos, a veces los reeleo en busca de una idea, pero la mayoría de las veces me concentro en lo que he escrito recientemente.

Así que todo me puede inspirar, ya sea lo que escuche, observe, mire. Estoy interesado también en vidas sociales y culturales ya que me ayudan a enriquecer mi vocabulario visual y me permite traducir mejor mis ideas y emociones.

4) Who or what are your inspirations?

My big influence then was the surrealist artists like Dali, Magritte, and others. Everything that was surrealist, in painting but also in literature, in poetry and in movies. Photomontage pioneers also like John Heartfield, Max Ernst, Jacques Prévert. Rapidly although I became inspired by a lot of things coming my way, in my surroundings, to a point that it is difficult to name anything in particular. I always carry on me a notebook in which I can write (mainly) and draw ideas for new images, for titles of work, etc…

I can also write down notes not necessarily related to my inspiration of the moment but  about music I would like to listen to, exhibitions I would like to see, websites I should visit. I write down interesting parts of books I’m currently reading, etc. These notes also feed, indirectly, my inspiration sometimes. I have written a large quantity of these notebooks, sometimes I browse into them to look for an idea, but most of the time I concentrate on what I have written recently.

So everything can inspire me, I listen, observe, look; I am interested in cultural and social lives. This enrich my visual vocabulary and allows me to better translate my ideas and emotions.

5) ¿Como artista tienes alguna pieza favorita?, y si es así ¿cual de todas?

La pieza que prefiero sobre todo siempre es la que acabo de hacer. Pero, por supuesto, siempre es sorprendente ver algunas piezas que llaman más la atención del público sobre algunas otras (no siempre el que más me gusta a mi). A continuación, me fijo en estas piezas con más cuidado y empiezo a descubrirlas de nuevo. Así que, como el proceso de creación, que siempre descubre su obra de arte a través del acto de puesta en el mundo, pero también a través de los ojos de su público, que es fascinante en ambos sentidos.

5) You best piece in your opinion and way?

The piece I prefer over all is always the one I just did. But of course it is always surprising to see some pieces getting more attention from the public over some other (not always the one you prefer). Then you look at these pieces more carefully and start discovering them anew. So, like the process of creation, you always discover your artwork through the act of putting them into the world but also through the eye of your public, which is fascinating in both ways. Of course I have not a best piece, but it is although an interesting question.

6) ¿Cuando te diste cuenta de que la gente estaba dispuesta a pagar dinero por tus obras de arte?

Al principio ni siquiera sabía que para ser un ilustrador podía ser un trabajo. Cuando empecé a ser comisionado por las revistas, vi que la gente estaba dispuesta a pagar dinero por mis trabajos, que fue el comienzo de la carrera que va desde entonces.

6) When did you realize that the people were willing to pay money for your artworks?

At the beginning I didn’t even know that to be an illustrator could be a job. When I started to be commissioned by magazines I saw that people were willing
to pay money for my illustration, that was the beginning of career that goes on since then.
